You find a common denominator

3/4 - 1/6 = ?

common denominator would be 12

9/12 - 2/12 =7/12

you have to multiply the top and bottom by the same number

3*3 and 4*3 so 3/4 = 9/12

1*2 and 6*2 so 1/6 = 2/12
