The easiest way for me to determine if one fraction is equivalent to another is to divide the top number by the bottom number on both fractions. If you get the same results with both fractions, then they are equivalent.

For example:

Are 3/6 and 7/14 equivalent?

If you divide 6 into 3, you will get .50, or 1/2

If you divide 14 into 7, you will get .50, or 1/2

So both of these fractions are equivalent.

Another example:

Are 5/8 and 2/3 equivalent?

5/8 and 3/7

If you divide 8 into 5, you will get .625, or 625/1000

If you divide 3 into 2, you will get .66, or 66/100

So these two are not equivalent.
