The gutters and downspouts should be a minimum of 6".
You should try to limit the number of downspouts. The number is really determined by the length of gutter run. If the length is over 25-30 feet you may need a downspout at each end. Otherwise you would not be able to get enough pitch or slope on the gutter for it to drain properly. Aslo look to place downspouts where the excess water can easily drain away the house and foundation.
This depends on several factors. 1) size of gutter 2) size of downspout 3) amount of roof area draining into gutter
To repair leaky gutters, first remove debris and wash out the gutters with water. Apply gutter seam sealant to gutter seams, exposed nail/screw heads, and minor holes as needed (Purchase gutter seam sealant at your local home improvement store. It looks like a large tube of toothpaste). Replace any section of gutter that is pitted or rusted through. Make sure that all gutter sections are secured properly to the fascia boards. Replace any rotted fascia boards as needed. Install drip flashing around all roof edges. Fill gutters with water using a garden hose to check for leaks and proper drainage. Next time it rains watch the gutters for leaks and overflows. If water overflows the gutters, then you may need to adjust the slope towards the downspouts and or add additional downspouts. In addition, I recommend installing larger downspouts that will help prevent gutter overflow. Install downspout extensions to divert water away from the house structure. Hope this helps, Ken PS- Be careful not to fall off the roof or ladder when you are servicing gutters!
Some do-it-yourself sites that include this information are This Old House, WikiHow, Done Right and Rain Gutter Guide. The basic idea is to have a drill, long screws, outdoor silicone, the gutters and downspouts. Taper the gutters in the direction of the downspouts for gravitational water drainage.

A gutter cleaning home business provides a needed service to homeowners who are too busy or simply don't want to be bothered with the messy and somewhat dangerous task of keeping gutters and downspouts clear. While some gutter cleaning services may charge a flat per-house fee (say, $35 per house), others charge by the cumulative length of the gutters and downspouts (50 cents per linear foot, for example). For a challenging job, the per-house fee may be as high as $150, according to Servicemagic.com.
