You have to use a system of equations. This means first you solve for one variable and put it in terms of the other. This allows you to have to variables but they are now like terms thus they can be combined. For this specific equation lets say we isolate y. This means we start with the given equation,x^2+3y=5, and subtract x squarted from both sides. Then divide both sides by three. The y is then defined as (-x^2+5)/3. The next step to to then substitute the y i the original equation with the part of the system you just found. Thus the equation would look like this

x^2+ 3((-x^2+5)/3)=5. As you can see the whole y term is thus eliminated and the only variable left is x. Then the x^2 can be subtracted from each side and the three can be distributed on the left. This leaves you -x^2+5=15-3x^2. Then subtract 5 from both sides leaving -x^2=10-3x^2. Then add 3x^2 to both sides leaving 2x^2=10 and divide by 2 and tack square root of both sides leaving. x= square root of 5. Then plug the square root of 5 in for x in the origingal or the equation you solved to find y. Leaving you with y=0. This can be checked by plugging in the answers to the original equation and making sure it ends up w/ the appropriate answer. In this cas (square root of 5)^2 + 3(0)=5 Thus 5=5 so these answers are correct.
