Every thousand (or "mille" as it is in Latin), they would mark the point with a post. To this day they are called "miles". So 1 mile = 1000 x 2 footsteps = 2,000 footsteps

It will differ. If your average footstep is 1 meter then there will be 1,000 footsteps in a km. You will have to do the math and measure your footsteps. See how many you take in 100 meters and then multiply that number by 10. Or how many you take in 10 meters and then multiply by 100.
