Majong is an ancient Chinese game. There are many theories about the origin of majong. A majong set has 144 tiles w/picture or script on them which may be classified into four suits, the bamboo, circle, character, and wind. In each suit, there are 36 tiles. American majong sets usually have 166 tiles. We are familiar with the solitare version where the tiles are removed in pairs off an intricate stack, until there are no more moves, or no more tiles. Of course there are versions that have historically involved multiple players and gambling.

The structure of "The Joy Luck Club" is like a game of Mahjong in that it consists of four parts, reflecting the four players in Mahjong. Just as in the game where players strategize and reveal their tiles, in the book, the four mothers and four daughters take turns sharing their stories, revealing their experiences, and forming connections through their narratives. The book, like Mahjong, is a complex interplay of individual stories that ultimately come together to create a larger, interconnected narrative.
