Yes, there is an elf named Alabaster in historic elf history. Alabaster was known to be one of Santa's original elves.
Alabaster is a kind of mineral, and so an alabaster box is made of alabaster. The word "alabaster" can refer to two different minerals. One is gypsum, the same stuff as found inside of drywall sheets, and as anyone who has ever put a hole in their wall knows, gypsum is extremely soft. This means that an alabaster box will probably not be made of gypsum. The other mineral given that name is a kind of marble which is very hard, and so this is the kind of mineral we're talking about when we think of an "alabaster box." Alabaster is usually white, sometimes marked with browns or tans.

There are several exact copies of this statue circulating around on the internet; I purchased one of them. Although it is a very nice statue, it is NOT carved alabaster as was claimed. Instead, it is cast alabaster. That is, it is made from a mixture of ground-stone and resin, poured into a mold and allowed to harden. There must be an original, carved version in existence somewhere (from which the others were cast), but you probably won't find it for sale in the $100 to $200 price range. Still, the copy I purchase is detailed and well-made, and for me at least, worth the $175 I paid for it.
