If you have the mass of an object how do you find the volume?

If you know the mass of an object, you can find the volume if you know the density. Since Density = mass/volume (D=M/V) , the volume is the mass divided by the density (V = M/D).

The mass tells you the physical amount, as in number of atoms, molecules, or moles present, which on Earth means the effective weight. In order to find the volume, which is the space that the object or substance takes up, you need to know the density of the material, i.e.. how concentrated the mass is.

Given a fixed mass, both volume and density can change with conditions, especially for gases.

Density = mass/volume so that Volume = mass/density

Example:

1000 grams of pure elemental Iron

Solid iron at standard temperature has a density of 7.87 g/cm3

So 1000 grams/7.87 g/cm3 gives a volume of about 127 cm3

(a kilogram of iron can make a cube about 5 cm on a side)
