In Civilization IV, you can combine units by moving them into the same tile. When two or more units of the same type (e.g., two archers) are stacked together, they will automatically combine into a single, stronger unit. However, you cannot merge different unit types or combine units that are not of the same category (e.g., melee with ranged). Additionally, if you combine a unit with a higher experience level with one of lower experience, the resulting unit retains the higher experience level.

When SI units combine, they create derived SI units that are used to express physical quantities. These derived units are formed by multiplying or dividing the base SI units. Examples include the Newton (kg*m/s^2) for force and the Pascal (N/m^2) for pressure.
A window should pop up when you create a city asking you what unit you wish to build. Select which one and the city will build it. If you want to change which one you are building, select the city and change it in the management screen. If you want to combine multiple units into an army, move two units onto the same tile, click one, select-join all units into army* (usually depicts three men in DIFFERENT colored clothing standing together) and they will combine to move and attack together. *If you click the button with three men standing together wearing the same color, it will only combine units of the same type such as only combing archers and leaving out swordsmen ect.
