In popular culture, the number 42 has become somewhat famous thanks to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book and radio series. (It's meant to represent the ultimate answer to everything; problem is, nobody's figured out the ultimate question it supposedly solves.)

The creator of the series, Douglas Adams, had admitted that the number itself was chosen as a joke, for its very ordinariness. There are no superstitions attached to it that I'm aware of.
