You must change the denominators so they are the same:

eg 5/12 - 1/8

first multiply 5/12 by 2 = 10/24

then multiply 1/8 by 3 = 3/24

now both fractions have the same denominators, subtract 3 from 10

10/24 - 3/24 = 7/24

First, you have to multiply the fractions so that both of the denominators come out to be the same divisor. For example:

1/2 - 1/4

*multiply 1/2 by two, both in the numerator anddenominator.

2/4 - 1/4 = 1/4
