This kind of question can often be answered quite easily with basic algebra - if you are happy with basic algebra. Suppose 10 is 40% of some number x. What you are then saying is 10 / x = 40 / 100 Inverting both sides, x / 10 = 100 /40 Multiplying both sides by 10 gives x = 100*10 / 40 = 1000/ 40 = 25
