A phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, often shortened to PDE5 inhibitor, is a drug used to block the degradative action of phosphodiesterase type 5 on cyclic GMP in the smooth muscle cells lining the blood vessels supplying the corpus cavernosum of the penis. These drugs are used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and were the first effective oral treatment available for the condition. Because PDE5 is also present in the arterial wall smooth muscle within the lungs, PDE5 inhibitors have also been explored for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, a disease in which blood vessels in the lungs become abnormally narrow.

In mathematics what does the abbreviation PDE stand for?

The abbreviation PDE stands for partial differential equation. This is different from an ordinary differential equation in that it contains multivariable functions rather than single variables.

What are catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitors?

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors are a class of medication used in combination with levodopa and carbidopa in the treatment of symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD).

What is a drawback of trying to solve a partial differential equation explicitly?

As far as I'm aware a PDE can't be solved explicitly because of the nature of the equation. However, you can separate the variables of a PDE essentially turning it into multiple ODEs which then can be solved explicitly. The draw back of this is that most terms in a PDE are a combination of variables, such as 3xy+2yz+xyz, rather than being separated neatly already (making separation into ODEs easy), such as x+y+z. In cases where the variables are jumbled up with each other, there are often faster and easier ways of solving the PDE than trying to separate the variables into ODEs and solving explicitly.

How do you derive the main PDE in the Heston stochastic volatility model?

It is not possible to reproduce the equations on this website, however you can find a detailed derivation at the related link.

Change of variables in partial differential equation?

Change of variables in partial differential equations (PDEs) involves substituting new variables to simplify the equation or convert it to a more solvable form. This technique can help reduce the complexity of the PDE, making it easier to analyze or solve. Common transformations include linear transformations, coordinate shifts, or non-linear substitutions, and they often exploit symmetries or specific features of the problem. Ultimately, the goal is to facilitate finding solutions or gaining insights into the behavior of the system described by the PDE.

How can one define the meaning of Aromatase inhibitors?

The meaning of Aromatase inhibitors can be defined as drugs that are used to treat ovarian and breast cancer in postmenopausal women. There are currently two types of Aromatase inhibitors that are approved to treat breast cancer.

What chemical inhibitors are often used. And what chemical reactions are they used in?

An inhibitor is a substance added in a system with the goal to decrease the rate of reaction. Example: inhibitors added to decrease the rate of corrosion, inhibitors in drugs the decease the activity of an enzyme, etc.
