The number zero has huge significance.

Without it the decimal based system which we all use (because it is the easiest system for humans to perform calculations with) would not be possible. The decimal system has the number base of 10. This is to say that we can represent all possible numbers from a pool of ten digits. 0 is the first of these ten digits.

Also, bear in mind that without the number zero you wouldn't even be able to ask me this question as we wouldn't have computers either. Machines operate using the binary system which has a base of 2. All numbers in binary can be represented using a pool of 2 digits; 0 & 1.
