Properties of Matter
• Physical Properties: the inherent characteristics of
matter that are directly observable.
- Color
- Melting point
- Boiling point
• Chemical Properties: the characteristics of matter
that allow it to form new substances
Alcohol ignites in a flame.
Wood is burned in a fireplace.
Changes in Matter
• Physical changes: changes to matter that do not
result in a change the inherent make-up of the
substance
- State changes: boiling, melting, condensing
• Chemical changes: changes that involve a change
in the fundamental components of the substance
- Chemical reactions: Reactants → Products
e.g. propane + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water

Application of matter in daily life :
We could see many examples of matter in our day to day life. when we see bench, pen, paper we can see that occupy some definite size, shape and volume, we just cant place them in any given volume. Let us observe fluids like water, kerosene, milk we could see them flowing and occupying shape of the container, but they require some particular volume or they will flow out of the container.
Again when we see come across gases they are even more free, they move where ever they want and even be compressed in to certain space. They neither have definite shape, size nor volume.
Logs are transported from the forest through rivers to the sawm.Logs float because less denser than water
Hot air balloon rises in the air when the hot air in the balloon isless dense than the surrounding air.
It falls when the cooled air in the balloon is denserthan the surrounding air
A submarine can be made denser or less dense than the surrounding water by pumping water in and out of it·Hence, it can float or sink in water
A raft is made of bamboo or logs.
It floats because bamboo or logs are less dense than water.
