In algebraic equations, a term is like one number that is obtained without adding or subtracting. However, it's not always this easy. For example, consider the equation 4x2+8x+3. In this equation, there are three terms. One is 4x2, one is 8x, and one is 3. Basically, you take away the addition signs to get three separated terms.
Now consider this equation: 9x3-2x2-5x+7. In this example, like before, you just take away the addition signs to get the terms. But be careful! don't take away the subtraction signs. Remember that subtracting is actually adding a negative. In other words, x-y=x+(-y). So, if you change the equation into 9x3+(-2x2)+(-5x)+7, and take away the addition signs, you are left with the terms 9x3, -2x2, -5x, and 7.

A term is a constant number, a variable, or a variable with a coefficient. Terms are separated from each other by addition or subtraction signs. For example, -7x is a term. 3xy is a term. 4b+m is two terms.
