If you add positive one and negative one, you get zero. Imagine it as a number line: -10~-9~-8~-7~-6~-5~-4~-3~-2~-1~0~1~2~3~4~5~6~7~8~9~10 for a positive, you go up that many units from zero. Then for the negative one, move down that many units. Where you land would be your answer. (+2)+(-3)=-1, etc.
