By ones own actions (e.g. telling the police, government or for children, the school authorities), to cause someone else to take a loss, punishment or other undesirable circumstance, is to dobb them in. It's when someone tells another person something bad, illegal, embarrasing, etc. that you've done. For example, if you defrauded the government of social security payments, tax, etc. and someone reports you to the government, you've been dobbed in.
