With linear functions (y=mx+b type problems): when finding the intersection of two lines (aka, solving a system of equations), if there is no intersection, it is considered "no solution" and the two lines are parallel to each other. If any x and y pair that fit for one line fits for another, then there are infinite many solutions. This means that the two lines are actually the same line and are considered an "identity."
