If you wish to become a geologist, you should begin studying geology as early as possible before you finish your mandatory schooling. You should then look for colleges with geology programs. After selecting a school and a study curriculum, obtain a bachelor's or masters degree in geology.

Geology is essentially an amalgamation of the three main sciences: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Maths also plays a very significant role. As such, the study of these subjects is very important. Then it is normal to undertake (as a minimum) an undergraduate degree in geology.

Most geologists will undertake further (continuing) professional development and academic training during their carers possibly including a taught postgraduate course (e.g. an MSc) and some may also undertake academic research (e.g. a PhD).

Ultimately they ill aim to become chartered or registered as a professional geologist (e.g. CGeol in the UK) with a professional body (for example the Geological Society in the UK or the Institute of Professional Geologists in the US).
