To say that an equation is directly proportional is somewhat incorrect. What we say instead is that a variable on one side of the equation (in other words, on one side of the equals sign) is directly proportional to another variable on the other side.

What this means is that if when one variable increases (gets bigger), the other one does, too, then these variables are directly proportional to each other.

For example, take the equation for velocity.

v = d/t

Here, v is velocity, d is distance, and tis time. Lets try a few numbers.

v = 100 miles/2 hours = 50mi/hr.

v = 200 miles/2 hours = 100mi/hr.

v = 400 miles/2 hours = 200mi/hr.

What you may notice here is that as the value of d (the number of miles being traveled), gets bigger, so does the value of v (velocity, or speed, in miles/hour). This is because, in this equation, velocity is directly proportional to distance.

What is speed directly proportional to?

Speed is directly proportional to distance traveled in a given amount of time. This means that as distance increases, the speed at which an object is traveling also increases proportionally.

Is this equation directly proportional y equal m times x plus b where b is a non zero number?

No. Although this an equation of a straight line and y increases when x increases, a directly proportional equation has y/x = constant. So if b is zero it is in direct proportion, but not if b is non zero

What is the energy in a photon of light proportional to?

The energy in a photon of light is proportional to its frequency, according to the equation E=hf, where E is energy, h is the Planck constant, and f is frequency. This means that photons with higher frequencies have higher energy levels.

Y is directly proportional to x?

If a variable (such as y) is directly proportional to another variable (such as x), they both increase and decrease simultaneously. An equation for two directly proportional variables is:y = axIt's sort of like a linear equation, but it always goes through the origin.An example is y = 6x. Notice that it forms a straight line and crosses the origin, and that y and x increase in the same direction.

Which equation represents the statement r is inversely proportional to s and directly proportional to the cube of t?

r = k(t^3 / s) where k is a constant of proportionality.

Do all linear equations need to be proportional?

No.A directly proportional graph has an equation of the form y = mx. It always passes through the origin.A linear graph will have an equation in the from y = mx + c. This has a y-intercept at (0, c). It doesn't pass through the origin unless c = 0. The directly proportional graph is a special case of a linear graph.

What is directly and inversely proportional relationship?

Directly proportional relationship is F=ma, F is directly proportional to a. Inversely proportional relationship is v=r/t, v is inversely proportional to t.
