A Prime number is the one which is divided by 1 and itself. In other words a prime number is the one which can be expressed as the product of exactly two distinct factors. That two factors are 1 and itself.

Ex: 11 = 1 X 11 , 5 = 1 X 5.

79 = 1 X 79 , 293 = 1 X 293

That's why 1 is neither a prime nor composite since it wont have two distinct factors.
