Perhaps you are thinking of the straight shorter blade that ninjas used against the samurai katana? That is the ninjaken, or ninja sword, obviously a technical term in japenese :P. The ninja would have the same length sheaths as the traditional katana, that way with the shorter blade they could draw it fractionally faster, and thusly surprise and kill the unsuspecting samurai.

A katana is a type of sword that originated in the Muromachi Period (1392-1573) in Japan. Although the Katana is classified as the single edged blade used by the Samurai, it actually can refer to any single edged blade. It is often a curved, slender, single-edged blade with circular or squared tsuba.
The Samurai sword is called a katana.
C.a.k.e
because without his katana(even weilding another person's katana), the samurai is nothing compared to a samurai with his own katana. the katana is specially forged for the particular samurai, and so it is very valuable to their identity.
the katana originated in china before the 8th Century AD, and in the 9th-10th Centuries AD, had made its way to japan, in the period known as Joko-to.the sword at this time was a straight, single edged blade. But by around the year 980AD however, in the Heian period, the Katana's distinctive curved shape began to appear, and created the shape which all subsequent katana types copied for close on 900 years, with gradual changes in some periods - the swords of the early edo period (around 1650AD), for example, were often almost straight, while those in the muromachi period (around 1400AD) were particularly curved.
The thing that is a sash like object that holds a katana is called an obi.

The sword is called a Katana. The katana originated in the Muromachi period (1392--1573) as a result of changing battle conditions requiring faster response times. The katana facilitated this by being worn thrust through a belt (obi)with the edge of the blade facing up, which allowed the samurai to draw and cut their enemy in a single motion. The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single edged blade, circular or squared guard, and long grip to accommodate two hands. It has historically been associated with the samurai of feudal Japan, and has become renowned for its sharpness and cutting ability. The Katana was a very popular sword to have during the feudal era because of how it looked and how effectively fast it could strike an enemy.
If you mean ''how to use it'', then it's a usual one-edged sword. But real katanas are VERY expensive, not just $500, and they're made so they'd last long and be razor sharp.
