What is the eighth term of the geometric sequence 3, 12, 48, 192, ... ?
X is the most famous variable in algebra, and a variable is a letter that stands for a number. It is used for you to apply methods of problem solving to get the answer, and the answer will be what x stands for. For example, if you see the problem 48-2x=100, you know you have to solve for x. The next step would be to subtract 48 from both ends of the equation, so you get (48-2x) -48= (100) -48 ---> -2x=52. Then you divide each side by -2 to get x by itself ---> -2x/2=52/-2 ---> x= -26. So you can see that x is not one specific number, it is just a variable.
14y minus 6y means "14 times a number, minus 6 times the same number". If you have 14 things and you take away 6 things, you are left with 8 things. So, 8 times a number equals 48. 8 times what number gets you 48? Since you are already in Algebra I, you know 8 times 6 gets you 48, so the number (y) is 6. The formal Algebra I approach is to combine like terms, then divide. 14y - 6y = 48 (Subtract 6y from 14 y. (14y - 6y = 8y, and the y does not go away) 8y = 48 (Now divide both sides by 8 to get the y all by itself) 8/8y = 48/8 (8/8 is 1, and 48/8 is 6, so 1y = 6. You can lose the 1 because one thing is the thing itself.) y = 6 Does that help? There are many ways to solve this problem, but Algebra I is teaching the proper steps for solving one, two and three step equations. Stick with it.
Do your own work. It is far more rewarding that way. Answers.com also does not provide direct answers to text book questions.

Algebra may seem really stupid in school, but it does serve a purpose through life. For example if you had $x and you can get 40 litres of petrol, 1 litre costing $1.20? Here's how you do it using algebra. 1=$1.20 40=$1.20x40=$48 .'.x=$48 Hope this helps, but I suck at maths.

The author of the book "48 Days to the Work You Love" is Dan Miller. The book is an instructional book to achieving one's goals in their workplace over a 48 day period.
Nonconsecutive pages are pages that are not next to each other. This could be page 4 48, 57, and 122. Sometimes this is done to give you a sample of the book but not give you too much that you would not purchase the book.
