It depend on the scale of the map. In the UK, Ordnance Survey maps are in metric, though miles and inches are also shown on the scale bar. A popular map scale is 1:50 000 which means that 1 cm on the map represents 50,000 cm on the ground. It is still possible to find the old 1" to 1 mile maps by searching on the internet.
