What is the difference between the ti 84 plus and the ti 84 plus silver edition?

This is a basic overview of the 83 series, starting with the 83 plus.

83 Plus:

Features a 2.5mm link jack, runs at 6 mhz, and has 512 kb of Flash ROM. The ROM can be used for loading applications or storage.

83 Plus Silver Edition:

Changes: 96 kb of additional RAM, 1.5 mb of Rlash ROM, a dual speed 6/15 mhz processor, and more preinstalled applications.

84 Plus:

It is my understanding that the 84+ and the 83+SE are basically the same, except the 84+ features a clock, a built-in USB port, and some additional commands.

84 Plus Silver Edition:

Features 3 times the memory of the 84+.

The calculator that is right for you depends on what you plan to use it for. If all you plan to do is basic math, one of the earlier calculators will work. However, these calculators are capable of much more that just basic math. 3rd party applications and programs can be downloaded from sites such as ticalc.org. These can add immense new functionality to your calculator, from 3D graphing, to spell checkers, to games. There is even a world atlas application available for download. However, these programs and applications take up a lot of space. The TI 84+ SE can give you that space. I own a TI 84+, and there are times when I wish I had the Silver Edition, so I would not have to pick and choose between the Apps I have installed at any given time.
