A unit for a measurement is what you are measuring in terms of. Length, for example, can be measured in millimetres, centimetres, inches, feet, yard, metres, chains, furlongs, kilometres, miles, etc. [plus many smaller, intermediate and bigger units.]

A standard unit is one whose size is internationally agreed.

The basic units of the SI system are: meter for length, kilogram for mass and second for time. There are standard units for most characteristics that you may wish to measure: speed, force, temperature, conductivity etc.
