A ditch acting as a fence is commonly referred to as a "drainage ditch" or "fence ditch." It serves to delineate property boundaries and can also manage water drainage to prevent flooding. These ditches are often dug to create a physical barrier while also providing functional benefits.
A Trench
When constructing a rectangular anti-tank ditch, the spoil should be placed on the side of the ditch opposite the intended direction of attack. This placement helps create a berm that can enhance the ditch's defensive capabilities. Additionally, the spoil should be spread evenly to avoid creating obstacles that could hinder movement or visibility for defensive operations. Proper management of the spoil is crucial to maximize the effectiveness of the ditch.

It depends on what kind of fence you wish to put up. For example, an electrified barbed wire and steel post fence would only require about three posts. But a wood plank and wood post fence would require about five or six.

I asked the same question to a world class jumper and he did not know. On my own research investigation I came across "ox fence" which is a strong fence consisting of a ditch, hedge and rail on one side. I would surmise that the double rail fence (show jumping -oxer) is called an oxer because of its similarity to a strong fence to keep in oxes . I am continuing my investigation and will report any new findings.
