-5 multiplied by x is -5x. You cannot multiply -5 and x and get only coefficient (number) digit. Because you do not know what x is, you have to just leave it at that; -5x. -5x is just a way of writing -5*x or -5 times x or -5(x). In algebra, you almost never use -5*x. You have to attach the variable (the x) to the coefficient (-5), because that is the proper way of writing multiplication problems in algebra.

Say you want to do x*y. That would be xy.

x times y= xy

x times x= x^2 (in real life, you would put an x with a little tiny 2 at the top right corner of the x.)

x times y times 7 = 7xy

x times x times y times 7 times q = 7x^2yq

Well, g'luck, whatever you're doin~
