A real life application is for example,

A new store is opening and you shop there, you buy 5 items

4.99

6.99

8.99

2.56

4.75

But they charge you 32.50... Wait that cant be right...

the sum of those 5 prices is $28.28 now assuming tax is 8.25% set up the proportion X/Y=tax rate/100 where X is the tax and Y is the subtotal

X/28.28=8.25/100

X=233.31/100

X=2.3331

Now add X to Y

28.28+2.33=$30.61

They should be charging you $30.61 not $32.50, That's $2 you could be using for a candy bar.

You could use the same proportion to see if you have enough money to buy, say groceries to feed your family, or buy the two new X-Box games!

Point is YOU NEED MATH!!!
