-10 is the smaller number. Any number that is negative (-) is always smaller than a positive (+) number or zero. We could look at it this way: If I have $10, I can go buy something with it. If I have $0, I'm staying home because I have no money to spend. If I have -$10, I actually owe someone money and will have to pay $10 to get back to having $0.
