One way to answer this is that 42=2x3x7, so it's sqrt(2)*sqrt(3)*sqrt(7) but that's probably not very helpful.

If you have a calculator which is just one tiny step up from the most basic, you can just do [square root key], [42], [=], and you will get 6.4807..., or say about 6.5.

Check by going 6.5*6.5 = 42.25, or 6.48*6.48 = 41.9904.

Also note that 62 = 36 and 72 = 49, and 42 is a bit less than half-way from 36 to 49, so it makes sense that the square root of 42 is just under 6.5
