A prism is a generic term used to describe a polyhedron with two parallel and congruent polygonal bases and a number of rectangles joining the two bases. The bases can also be curved, in which case they are joined by a curved surface.

The total surface area of a prism will be 2*area of base + perimeter of base*length of prism.
