If you remove the decimal it will become a whole number and a wholly different number.

For example the number 34.88 (thirty-four and eighty-eight hundredths) which is a fairly small number, even for a decimal. If you remove the decimal from 34.88, the number will become 3,488 (three thousand, four hundered eighty-eight) which is a whole number and wholly different from 34.88.
