When adding numbers the digits in the place value columns of one number must be added to the digits in the same place value columns of the other number.

The decimal point ALWAYS lies immediately to the right of the ones column (and to the left of the tenths column).

Therefore, to ensure decimal numbers are aligned properly with the correct digits underneath each other for addition, write the two numbers with their decimal points aligned - one under the other.

The decimal point of the result of the addition also lies aligned with the decimal points - under them.
