The pituitary gland is divided into two distinct functional units: the anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis) and the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis). The anterior pituitary produces and secretes hormones such as growth hormone, prolactin, and adrenocorticotropic hormone, while the posterior pituitary stores and releases hormones like oxytocin and vasopressin, which are produced in the hypothalamus. This division allows the gland to regulate various physiological processes, including growth, metabolism, and water balance.
Imagine 4squared (16) divided by 4 (4). Therefore units squared divided by units would be units.
One of the functional units of a myofibril is the sarcomere. The word sarcomere comes from the Greek words sarx, meaning flesh, and meros, meaning part.

Density is measured in units of mass divided by units of volume. The SI unit is kilograms/meter3.

Nephron units are located in the kidney cortex. They are the functional units responsible for filtering blood and regulating the electrolyte balance and fluid volume in the body. Each kidney contains thousands of nephron units.
Genes are the functional units of heredity.
Zoning laws.Mass transit allowed city planners to segregate parts of the city by zoning, or designating certain areas for particular functions.

Proteins, one of the four macromolecules, consist of a variety of units known as amino acids. They can be divided into two classes: fibrous proteins, which are structural and provide support (like collagen), and globular proteins, which are functional and often involved in biochemical processes (like enzymes).
DNA and RNA contain functional units known as nucleotides, which are composed of a sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) contains functional units called phosphate groups, which are crucial for the transfer of energy in cells.

Why is the earth divided into very long units of time
I have no idea what you mean with "functional unit". The SI has units to measure lots of different things; basically there are seven base units (such as the meter, the second, and the kilogram), and several dozen derived units, i.e., units derived from the base units, for example meters/second for speed.
