1) The rectangular shape is easily viewable in the horizontal and vertical POV limits of human vision (as the areas that can be viewed by the eyes within their orbits cover a wider horizontal span than vertical (as the two eyes are set side-by-side, and POV span overlaps wider horizontally).

2) From the days of early TV design, it was always much easier to control the displacement of the electron beam via magnetic fields (the electromagnetic yoke) by simply having the raster scan (back-and-forth and top-to-bottom pattern of sweeping the screen to display all pixels on the screen) sweep a rectangular screen, rather than a more rounded one. There has been no reason since then to change this design, as it is optimal for now.
