Why did mount Pinatubo create a large number of refugees?

Because when it began to erupt, a large number of the people who lived in places

where lava might flow up their driveway and into their basement, or it might rain

red-hot stones on them some night, decided to get out of there and go somewhere

else ... anywhere else ... for a while, at least until the mountain settled down.
