Many branches of science require the use of very large or very small numbers and the scientific notation is suitable for handling such numbers.

The SI units are not only easier to use since they only require the user to know how to manipulate the decimal point, there are many simple crossovers from the measurement unit for one characteristic to another for example, centimetre to litre. Or the fact that the Joule, for example, is a derived unit based on the appropriate SI units taking the values 1.
