Each hour was associated with one of the seven objects moving in the sky: Sun, Moon, and the five visible planets. This rotated through the 24 hour day, so each day would start with a different object. The days were then named for those objects:

Sun--Sunday

Moon--Monday

Mercury (Germanic Tiuw)--Tuesday

Jupiter (Germanic Wotan)--Wednesday

Mars (Thor)--Thursday

Venus (Germanic Frigga or Freya)--Friday

Saturn--Saturday

Why does every day of the week end with day?

The days of the week in English were mostly named for Norse gods, for example, Thursday = Thor's day. The pattern holds for many of the Germanic languages, too. The Russian week day names are based on a count starting with понедельник (Ponedel'nik) which comes, literally, from "Beginning of the week". In Spanish, you see Roman gods giving their names to the days.
