You multiply numbers because you're trying to find a multiple. You multiply prime numbers because you're trying to find the smallest common number. You could multiply common composite factors, but the result wouldn't necessarily be least.

What is the prime factorization of 2x2x7x7?

Prime factorization is a list of all the primes that multiply to make the original number. Thus to find that number you just multiply all these numbers together. In this case we have 2, 2, 7 and 7, so multiply them together to get: 2x2x7x7 = 296. Therefore, 2x2x7x7 is the prime factorization of 296.
