The simplest answer is that you can get the right answer without it.

Example: 1/2 x 1/4

That means you're going to split 1/4 into two parts and keep one of the parts.

I/2 of 1/4 is 1/8

You can get the same answer with common denominators.

2/4 x 1/4 = 2/16 = 1/8

But it's not necessary to do the extra step.
