It is an interesting question, but be careful. There are imaginary people, and then there are imaginary people. You may occasionally hear a person talking to him or herself. This is not necessarily an example of a person talking to thin airwhile believing there is another person present. I talk to myself quite a lot, and while it may be a little eccentric and funny on those rare occasions when I get caught, I never have the belief that I am having a conversation with a separate person. I am simply "thinking out loud".
If a person is hearing voices when there is no one present, or having actual interactive conversations with separate persons when there is no one there, that is a sign of a potentially serious problem.
