I'm presuming its factors for a monic quadratic trinomial--of form :
X squared + BX + C . You need the numbers that MULTIPLY to give C and ADD up to give B
Eg X squared + 8X + 12 factors to ( X+2) (X + 6 )
BUT X squared + 7X + 12 factors to (X +3 )(X + 4)
Hope this helps. Phil.
The factors of the monomial (5xy^2) include the numerical coefficient and the variable components. Specifically, the factors are (5), (x), (y), and (y) (since (y^2) can be expressed as (y \cdot y)). Thus, the complete factorization is (5 \cdot x \cdot y \cdot y).
Common monomial factors are the shared factors in a group of terms. Five examples include: 1) (2x) in the terms (2x^2) and (4x); 2) (3y) in (6y^3) and (9y^2); 3) (5z^2) in (10z^3) and (15z^2); 4) (a) in (3a^2b) and (5ab^2); and 5) (4m^2n) in (8m^3n^2) and (12m^2n). These factors can be factored out when simplifying expressions.
4 x 12 + 4 x 8 = 4 x (12 + 8) = 4 x 20 = 80
