Why would the mileage display only display six dashes instead of numbers when it shows other information in digits?

The speedometer and trip odometer could be in the troubleshooting mode. The A & G pins on the ALDL could be shorted together to get into this mode with the ignition on without starting the engine. When the dashes are there there are no codes present. If the CCM cannot communicate with other onboard computers you would have a ERR displayed. Id say check to see if there is a jumper between the A & G pins left in by a mechanic 1st.
