a man hole lid is shaped like a slice of a cone so that the radius of the top side is slightly larger than the radius of the bottom. it kind looks like this \_________/ . that way if you flip it on its side while lifting it it wont fall through. any other shape has a diagonal length longer than the side length and if it flipped on its side when you were lifting it it might fall through make the live of a plumber/civil engineer very upsetting.
