Neither miles nor km. are more or less precise. The advantages of using the metric system (SI, to be prcise) are (1) That it is easier to do conversions; for example, 17 km. = 17,000 m. (just add three zeroes); try to do the same with miles and feet! (2) That it is an international standard; it makes it easier to communicate if everyone uses the same units.

In terms of precision, kilometers are more precise than miles because one kilometer is equal to 0.621371 miles. This means that distances can be represented with greater accuracy in kilometers than in miles.
