Yes, lighting and wall receptacles use 12/2 wiring. Put no more than 10 lights, or outlets, or a combination of both on one circuit. Outlets for the refrigerator, microwave, washing machine, whirlpool bath, dishwasher, and garbage disposal, should each be on a dedicated circuit all their own. Kitchens require two dedicated circuits for wall receptacles. Check you local area for any variations of these codes.

No, 12-2 wiring is typically used for outlets and lighting circuits, not for wiring the entire house. For whole house wiring, it is more common to use larger gauge wires such as 10-2 or 8-2 to handle the higher loads and circuit lengths. Additionally, the wiring requirements will depend on the electrical code regulations and the electrical demand of the house.

Yes, but 14 2 conductor is easier to handle. <><><> As you asked this question here, the best advice anyone can give you is to check with a local licensed electrician or your local electrical safety authority to find out for sure what the wiring code in your locality (town/state) says about doing this change to your household AC wiring.

The wiring codes and regulations are much stricter in many countries these days - some codes make it illegal to do this kind of work if you are not already a licensed electrician in any room area or space which is likely to get water spray or splashes, such as a bathroom, shower room, laundry, pool area or similar. : IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

If you do this work yourself, always turn off the power

at the breaker box/fuse panel

BEFORE you attempt to do any work

AND

always use an electrician's test meter having metal-tipped probes

(not a simple proximity voltage indicator)

to insure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

You can use 12-2 with ground for all circuits of 20 amps or less. Things like electric dryers, electric stoves, air conditioners and like devices will require larger wire sizes.
You can use 12-2 wiring to replace 14-2 on the circuits that are rated at 15 amps but it will result in higher overall costs for the installation.
