For example you have 5/25. You pick a number for example 10. you multiply the denominator by 10 and that's the new denominator and you would multiply the numerator by 10 also and that would be your new numerator. So in this case it would be 50/250. Now you don't have to multiply them by 10 but you do have multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number that you pick.

If you can multiply both the numerator and denominator of one fraction by the same number to get the other fraction then the fractions are equivalent.

For example, 5/6 and 10/12 are equivalent because 5 x 2 = 10 and 6 x 2 = 12

How do you divide to find an equivalent fraction?

Divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common factor to reduce to its lowest equivalent fraction. For example, 169/260=13/20 after dividing the numerator and the denominator by 13.

Why is multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number the same as multiplying or dividing the fraction the fraction by 1?

Because doing so is equivalent to multiplying or dividing by x/x, which can be cancelled down to 1.

Why do you find the reciprocal of fractions when dividing?

Most people find multiplication by a fraction easier than dividing by a fraction. Dividing by a fraction is equivalent to multiplying by its reciprocal. For example, 10 / (3/4) would require you to divide by 3/4. How many three-quarters in ten? Hmmm... Not that easy. Instead, try multiplying by 4/3 Much easier: 10*(4/3) = 40/3 = 13.33...

Why do you have to multiply or divide both the numerator and the denominator of a fraction to find an equivalent fraction?

It is the basic law of algebra. When you multiply or divide both by the same number you do not change the value, as it is the same as multiplying or dividing by 1.
