It sounds like you're trying to wire up a dryer or an oven. Your old appliance has an old 3 wire cord and your home has a 4 wire plug. If you downgrade that plug your home no longer meets code. Put the new outlet back and install a modern cord on the appliance. New 4 prong plugs are required for new work. What you're suggesting is dangerous and violates the National Electrical Code and can cause you some serious problems with the insurance company, building department and fire department if the house catches fire and you're caught. Use the proper wire, breakers, plugs and outlets for the application. It's not that much more expensive and everything will work properly when you're done.

How do you wire two electrical recepticles in one box?

A switched duplex receptacle can be wired two ways. If both duplexes are to be switched then the receptacle is wired the same as any light fixture. The black wire from the bottom of the existing switch goes to the brass screw on the receptacle that is to be switched. The white wire terminates on the neutral silver coloured screw. If you want just half of the duplex receptacle to be switched then the tie bar between the two brass screws on the receptacle has to be removed. Just wiggle it until it breaks free. Usually on a half switched receptacle the top half is switched and the bottom half remains a normal connection. After removing the tie bar, the top half of the receptacle is wired the same, as the description above, for a full duplex switched receptacle. Questions use the discuss question page.

Can your bathroom light switch be modified so that it does not need to be on in order for the GFI outlet on the opposing wall to work?

(LIFE SAFETY WARNING! [Disclaimer]Electricity is dangerous! You can be injured or killed!Improper installations can cause fire, injury and death!Should you be doing this yourself?)GFI receptacles are now installed on what is known as a small appliance branch circuitYours is old or an add-on.If the power for the receptacle comes from the switch box directly then you can make it work all the time by moving the hot wire feeding the GFI from the 'load' side of the switch to the 'hot' - permanently live - side of the switch.Remember that you only put one wire under a screw, so you will have to make up or change splices. [wirenut connections]If you aren't up to this, get an electrician. Actually, the most likely situation is that you have a receptacle under a light over the sink at the other side of the room from the switch. They did this to get a receptacle without doing the hard job.If that is the case, you are stuck unless you want to rewire the outlet from another source: a new 20 amp circuit like it SHOULD be - tear up your bathroom and run it to the switch like the people who put it in didn't want to! Or tear up something else and get power from somewhere else that is hot all the time. How do you wire a new light with an on off switch using wires coming from another light?

You can wire the new light by connecting the wires from the existing light fixture to the new light fixture. You would connect the hot wire (typically black) to the hot terminal on the new fixture, the neutral wire (typically white) to the neutral terminal, and the ground wire (typically green or bare copper) to the ground terminal. You can then install the on/off switch in the circuit to control the power to both lights.

How do you wire an outdoor light to a light switch?

To wire an outdoor light to a light switch, you will first need to run electrical wiring from the light fixture to the switch location. Next, connect the wiring to the terminals on the light fixture and the switch, making sure to follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram and local electrical codes. Lastly, test the connection to ensure the light turns on and off properly when the switch is flipped. If you are unfamiliar with electrical work, it's recommended to hire a licensed electrician for safety and proper installation.

How do you wire an additional light to another light with a switch?

In the wall switch box you should have a white and black pair from your source of power (120 volts). The other pair of black and white wires from the wall box should be going to the light fixture junction box. With the power off, connect the two white wires together with a wire nut. Connect the two bare copper ground wires together making sure that at least one of the ground wires goes under the green screw in the switch junction box. Turn the switch to the off position, no little indicator bump showing on the switch toggle lever. Now take the black incoming hot wire and put it under the top screw on the switch. Hot wires always go to the top of switches. Now put the black wire that is going to the light fixture under the bottom screw. Tighten both. Install the switch into the wall box with the switch handle in the down position. All switches when installed must be off in the down position. Install the switch plate cover.

How do you wire up 2 120V strands into a 240V if the 3 prong receptacle has 2 hots and a neutral but no place for the grounds and should you just wirenut the grounds and tuck them in the box?

On the three prong 240 v receptacle there shouldn't be a neutral because it's not needed. Should be two hots and the ground and tuck neutrals in box.

Can you run 3 pigtails off of 1 hot feed?

Yes. Make sure you have a good twist on wires with pliers before the wirenut. Make sure wirenut is sized for 4 wires of the proper size. All pigtails should be same gauge as hot.

What is the most widely used splice or joint in interior wiring installation to extend the length of wire from one point to another?

Most modern electricians simply use a wirenut to join two wires. If a wirenut is impractical a "lineman's splice" is probably the next most common as it has minimum diameter and very high strength.

How do you use wire nuts?

First twist together the wires to be joined. For larger wire use lineman's pliers to apply twist. Make the twist clockwise. Then twist on the wirenut clockwise on the wires. Wirenuts are rated as to how many wires of a certain size they can hold but in general twist by hand until you can twist no more and then about 1/2 twist with pliers. If the wirenut does not get tight it is too big or internal metal portion could be clogged in some way.

How to connect electricity wire to three wired out ceiling fan?

Some ceiling fans have a black, white and sometimes blue wire. The blue wire in this case is so you can switch a light separate from fan. If your fan doesn't have a light just put a wirenut on extra wire and ignore it. If you do have a light and want it switched you'll need an extra wire run to fan, and switch that wire for light.

How do you disconnect a light switch and outlet that are tied together?

If there is a black wire going from the outlet to the switch and the other side of the switch goes back to the outlet then just cut these wires and connect supply wire directly to outlet. If the supply goes to the switch first, disconnect from switch and connect the two wires with a wire-nut. Some situations only switch one of the two outlets in a duplex device. Do the same thing, but also replace the outlet since the strapping between both outlets has been removed.

How do you hook up a live wire into two switches?

First turn off the power. You can do it a couple of ways. Take your black hot wire and connect two black pigtail wires of the correct gauge to the wire via a wirenut. Then connect each of the two pigtails to each switch. Another way if the supply wire is long enough you can strip about 1/2 inch off about 4 inches from the end. Make a "U-shaped" bend in the stripped area and put that around one switch and strip the end and connect to the other switch.

What does wire splicing mean?

Electrical wire splicing is the act of removing the outer shell of a wire, exposing the inside and connecting to another wire that is also spliced. This also allows you to add length to wiring.
